Kitchen blenders are very useful tools because they can perform a number of tasks.  Among their applications are:

•    Crushing and mixing of ice for alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks
•    Emulsification of mixtures
•    Preparation of smooth purees such as vegetables and meat
•    Reduction of small solids, such as seeds and spices, into powder
•    Blending of the mixture of granules, powders, and liquids
•    Dissolution of solids into liquids

The four blades of the blender inside the container perform the crushing and mixing. These are usually angled with two positioned higher than the other two.  As they quickly spin, they perform a push and pull motion on the food inside the container crushing it, or if there are more than one type of food, blending them together.

Buying a Blender

Before buying a blender, determine the space in your kitchen where you will put it. This kitchen aide comes in a variety of types and sizes that your available space may well dictate which type and size you should buy. Height is of special concern.

You can buy a blender with either a metal or plastic base. Metal is more durable but this comes at a higher price. With plastic-based blenders, you have the option of selecting from a wide range of colors.

As for the containers, they can be either glass or plastic. Glass is more stable but it is heavier and more expensive. They are also more prone to breakage than the plastic jars.

Select one with settings that will suit your needs. Some types of blenders are specialized. They will work only in limited kinds of functions. Also, if there are special features that you need, such as the possibility of adding ingredients even when the blender is already running, check if they are available on the blender of your choice.

Using your Blender

Once you have washed and dried the jar, you are ready to blend your first puree or crushed ice and mix drinks. Before attaching the jar to the base of your blender, check if the blades can move freely. If they can, put in the jar, otherwise, disassemble the blade and check for obstructions and misalignments.

Plug the cord securely into an electrical outlet. Make sure that the voltage of your blender matches that output of your outlet. Fill the jar with the food you wish to process and turn on the switch.

If your puree is not smooth, turn off the blender and compress the food with any suitable utensil. This should get rid of air pockets causing uneven processing.

Blenders often overheat when they are used for long periods, causing the machine to shut down. If this happens, give it about 30 minutes to cool down and then try starting it again.

Blending Machine

Blending Machine

Some people find it hard to clean their blenders. Sometimes, they wash it as if they are washing a normal pitcher. Proper washing of your blending machine is necessary for it to function properly and for it to last longer. Here are ways of washing your blender properly without having to take it apart:

1.Make sure that the blender is in a firm and safe place, just like when you are to blend something.

2.Pour water into the blender, preferably warm, until it is half full.

3.Put in a few drops of dishwashing liquid. You can also add half a lemon to better remove the particles and the odor.

4.Plug in the blender.

5.Put the lid back before switching it on.

6.Put it to low power and let it blend for about 30 seconds. Make sure all particles have been removed.

7.Turn the blender off and unplug it before pouring all of the liquid on the sink.

8.Rinse the blender thoroughly.

9.Let it dry by placing it upside down. Do not forget to wipe the base with a cloth.

Another way of cleaning your blender is by taking it apart. This is more thorough than the first but requires more effort and time. Just make sure that before you take your blender apart, you know how to put it back. You can make a note of what goes where or, better yet, have the blender manual ready.

1.Take the blender apart by first removing it from the base. Take the lid off and carefully unscrew the blade. Remove other removable components where particles can get stuck.

2.Wash the blade, gasket seal, locking ring, and other accessories your blender might have. Use warm water mixed with dishwashing soap.

3.Rinse the components and let dry.

4.Clean the base by wiping it with a damp cloth. Do not put the motor in water or in the dishwasher. Wiping it clean will be enough. Also, you might want to check for any damage it might have.

5.Put your blender back together. If you have taken notes or have your manual with you, reassembling it will be easy.

Properly washing your blending machine is not enough to ensure that it will last for a long time. Remember to also use it properly by making sure that the appliance is dry before storage to avoid the blade getting dull and rusty. Also, it is good to wipe the base and wash the container after every use. This will prevent particles from hardening, which will be difficult to remove. Remember that proper use and washing will save you a lot of money on repairs or replacement.
