Initially, the Black & Decker Corporation was established as a machine shop. In 1917, the Black & Decker Corporation was able to develop and acquire the patent for the now familiar hand held power drill.
After developing and manufacturing many industrial types of equipment and upon finding out that factory workers would often “borrow” equipments from work to bring to their respective homes, the Duncan and Alonzo had the idea to develop power tools specifically for home improvement use. Then after the success of their home improvement and do-it-yourself line of products, home appliances were developed, further marking their stamp on the home improvement market.
